Made for anyone who plans their day around the weather

A weather station turns "what's it like out?" into a number you can trust — for the garden, the greenhouse, the school run or the cold store — without checking your phone.

Gardeners & greenhouses

Watch the outdoor temperature and a frost alarm to protect tender plants, and keep a sensor in the greenhouse so you know when to vent or add heat.

Home & family

See how warm and humid each room is, catch a nursery getting stuffy or a bathroom staying damp, and know whether the kids need a coat before school.

Weather enthusiasts

Track wind, rain, UV and pressure on a full 5-in-1 or WiFi station, and — on the smart models — publish your own weather online and view it from anywhere.

Outbuildings & small business

Long-range and multi-sensor stations keep an eye on a garage, cellar, stockroom or cold store, with alerts when a space drifts too warm, cold or damp.

A colour weather station showing indoor and outdoor temperature, humidity and a forecast

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Weather Station

6 min read Skygauge

A home weather station does something a phone app can't: it tells you the weather exactly where you are, right now, at a glance — no unlocking, no loading, no regional average. But "weather station" covers everything from a £30 thermometer to a full observation post on a pole. Here's what actually matters when you choose.

Decide what you want to measure

Start with the readings you'll actually use. If you only care about how warm it is inside and out, a simple indoor/outdoor thermometer is all you need. Add humidity and you can spot damp rooms and greenhouse conditions. Add a barometer and the station gives its own local forecast and a frost alarm. Only the fuller 5-in-1 and WiFi stations measure wind, rain, UV and pressure — worth it for enthusiasts, overkill for a hallway. Each product page lists exactly what it reads.

Sensor range and where it will go

The outdoor sensor talks to the display by radio, and range matters. Compact stations reach around 30 metres; longer-range models stretch to 100–150 metres in open air. Walls, metal and other electronics all cut that down, so measure the real distance to where the sensor will sit — the greenhouse at the bottom of the garden, the detached garage — and leave headroom. Wherever it goes, mount it in shade, out of direct sun and driving rain, or the outdoor temperature reads high and the forecast suffers.

Display, power and clock

Think about how you'll read it. Big digits and a backlight help across a room; a wide-angle screen matters if you'll see it at an angle; colour consoles show more at once. For power, battery sensors that last up to a year mean nothing to plug in outside, while a mains or USB-C display keeps the screen always on. If the station will double as a clock, a radio-controlled (MSF) clock sets itself to the exact time and handles the spring and autumn changes for you.

Extras worth having — and ones you won't use

Useful extras include a frost or ice alarm for gardeners and drivers, a pressure trend chart for reading the weather, multiple sensors to watch several rooms, sunrise, sunset and moon-phase times for planning outdoor days, and WiFi for phone access and voice assistants. Match these to how you'll really use the station — a gardener values the frost alarm and sun times; a landlord values multi-room humidity; a hobbyist values wind, rain and online upload — and don't pay for features you'll never look at.

Weather Station FAQs

What is a wireless weather station and how does it work?

A wireless weather station pairs an indoor display with one or more outdoor sensors. The sensor measures conditions — temperature, humidity, and on fuller models wind, rain or pressure — and sends them by radio to the display, so you read the outdoor weather from inside without any wires between them.

Do I need WiFi or an app to use one?

Most stations in our range work entirely on their own, with the sensor talking straight to the display — no WiFi, app or account. Only the smart models, like the Ambient Weather WS-2902, use your home WiFi, and that's to add phone access and voice-assistant support, not to work at all.

How does a weather station forecast the weather without the internet?

Stations with a barometer watch the trend in air pressure where you live: rising pressure usually means settling weather, falling pressure means unsettled. From that trend they show a simple 12–24 hour forecast for your exact location, which is different from a regional forecast off the TV or a website.

How far can the outdoor sensor be from the display?

It depends on the model — roughly 30 metres on compact stations, up to 100–150 metres on the longer-range ones — measured in open air. Walls, metal and other electronics shorten that, so site the sensor with as clear a path to the display as you can, and each product page lists its range.

Which weather station should I choose?

For just indoor and outdoor temperature, a simple thermometer like the Youshiko YC9075 or a Raddy display is plenty. For temperature, humidity, a forecast and a frost alarm, a colour station like the Powcan or Kalawen fits. For wind and rain too, choose a 5-in-1 such as the AcuRite Iris, or the WiFi WS-2902 to see it all on your phone. Each product page spells out what it measures.

Where should I put the outdoor sensor?

In shade, out of direct sun and driving rain — a north-facing wall or a sheltered eave is ideal. Sun on the sensor makes the outdoor temperature read too high, so a sheltered spot gives you the real air temperature and keeps any forecast honest.

How long does delivery take?

Orders are dispatched quickly and the delivery estimate for your address is shown at checkout before you pay. Delivery is free UK-wide on orders over £30, with a flat £3.99 charge under that.

Can I return a weather station if it isn't right?

Yes. If it isn't right for you, return it in line with our returns policy for a refund. Keep the packaging where you can and contact us first so we can make the return painless.
